The Missionary's Purpose
Elder Stevenson shared a story at the Island Park Branch while President Lesa was there about a missionary who was sent to Guam on his mission. This missionary was assigned to one of the outlying islands, where they speak Chamorro instead of English (which they had to learn on the fly from no training program). He was discouraged and didn't know why he was there. However, they had to go get some legal documents from one of the leaders there on the island. As they came into this man's office, the official pulled out a Book of Mormon that had been worn and well used. He told the missionaries that he knew the Book of Mormon was true and that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the Lord's church.
As the missionaries looked through this man's Book of Mormon, this Elder who didn't know why he was there saw an inscription and testimony in the front. It was written by this Elder's uncle, who happened to know the leader when they went to law school together over 15 years ago. Then the Elder knew why he was there. He and his companion asked to teach the man, who said that he couldn't convert because his mom was a bigwig at the church there. Nevertheless, he wanted to take the lessons, so he did...and then he converted.
His wife asked him why, and he handed her his Book of Mormon and told her that if she read it, she would know why. She read it and was converted, too!
